Our committee's review
Originally from the Spanish Pyrenees, Cabernet Franc is the emblematic grape of the Loire Valley reds, found above all in Chinon, Saumur-Champigny and Bourgueil.
Celebrated for its finesse of aromas, its juicy, crunchy character and its delicate spice, it adapts effortlessly to soils of every kind — limestone, clay, flint, sand or silt.
It is the champion of wines that are both dense and lively, revealing a new facet every time in the hands of talented winemakers. Francis Jourdan in Chinon, Yannick Amirault in Bourgueil and Antoine Sanzay in Saumur-Champigny all bring their own brilliance, with wines that radiate freshness and simplicity.
This trilogy showcases all the nuances of this popular grape. Perfect for summer pairings, especially BBQ. At this price, hesitation isn’t an option.
Still very young, the 2021 Red Chinon Les Varesnes opens with aromas of black fruit and striking graphite notes. The palate is concentrated and perfectly ripe, with firm, structured tannins. A fine bottle built to age, best enjoyed over the next six to eight years, and worth decanting if needed. Rated 92 out of 100 by the Selection Committee.
Flagship of the estate, the 2023 Red Bourgueil Côte 50 shows all the depth of Cabernet, preserved through delicate aging in large oak casks and clay jars. The nose reveals aromas of truffle, graphite and macerated black fruit. On the palate, it is concentrated and ripe, with firm structure, a touch of graphite and discreet aging that highlights the black fruit aromas. Rated 92 out of 100 by the Selection Committee.
Of excellent maturity, the 2023 Saumur-Champigny La Paterne Red reveals Cabernet Franc’s hallmark graphite notes alongside concentrated aromas of blackberry and blueberry. The wine is supported by discreet aging that preserves the fruit while adding depth and polish. On the palate, it unfolds in a supple, velvety texture with refined tannins and impressive length, finishing once again on that graphite signature. A wine with 6 to 8 years of cellaring potential; if opened young, it will benefit from a long decant. The very soul of Saumur-Champigny is captured here. Rated 93/100 by the Selection Committee.
